Rafael Nadal Reaches First Final in Two Years: Swedish Open Success
Rafael Nadal, the 22-time Grand Slam champion, reached his first final in two years by defeating Duje Ajdukovic at the Swedish Open. Recovering from a significant hip surgery, Nadal prepares for the Paris Olympics and will compete in both singles and doubles events alongside Carlos Alcaraz.
Rafael Nadal reached his first final in two years on Saturday, defeating qualifier Duje Ajdukovic 4-6 6-3 6-4 in the Swedish Open semi-finals. The 38-year-old Spaniard, preparing for the Paris Olympics, fought through a hip injury that required surgery last year. Nadal took four hours to overcome Mariano Navone 6-7(2) 7-5 7-5 in the quarter-finals on Friday.
Nadal expressed his persistence throughout the tournament, saying, "I fought the whole tournament to be where I am today. Matches like yesterday and today help to improve a lot of things on court." He added, "It’s always a great feeling to be in a final. I won four matches in a row. A lot of things happened. That’s the truth."
The Spaniard, who owns one Olympic gold in men's singles and one in doubles, aims to compete in both events in Paris with Carlos Alcaraz. Nadal acknowledged his ongoing recovery from hip surgery, noting, "Things aren’t going that easy. But I’m fighting... let’s see if I’m able to play a little better tomorrow." He will face either seventh seed Nuno Borges or Argentine Thiago Agustin Tirante in Sunday's final.
