A global tech outage disrupting operations across multiple sectors also impacted aspects of the Paris Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) revealed on Saturday.

The outage resulted from a software update by cybersecurity giant CrowdStrike, leading to grounded flights, halted broadcasts, and disrupted services in sectors like healthcare and banking. It also temporarily affected some Paris Games organisers' operations.

Addressing the incident, IOC spokesperson Mark Adams stated, "Yes, there were some significant problems in the morning, but it was pretty well dealt with. It was quite a good rehearsal." The Paris Games are set to commence on July 26.

Adams acknowledged the inevitability of cyberattacks, noting, "Cyberattacks are part of everyone's daily lives. The Olympic Games are a huge target. We have a huge amount of safeguards in place. I would not go into detail even if I could explain it. We have been assured by our people and partners that we are very, very prepared."

He also highlighted parallels with the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, affected by cyberattacks. Despite the challenges, Adams expressed confidence in handling future cyber threats.

In addition to discussing the Paris Games, the IOC executive board reviewed France's bid for the 2030 Winter Games, to be voted on next week. The French bid, involving the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur regions, still requires key guarantees for approval, including public partnership contributions from the regions.

Political unrest in France has added complexity to the bid. Nonetheless, Adams said, "(France 2030) will be on the agenda on Wednesday. We still have some working days left to go, and I urge you to wait until then." The two-Games vote will also consider Salt Lake City for the 2034 Winter Games.
