Javier Aguirre has been named head coach of Mexico's national soccer team for a third time, replacing Jaime Lozano, confirmed the Mexican soccer federation on Monday.

Rafael Marquez, a veteran of five World Cups and former coach of Barcelona's reserve team, will serve as Aguirre's main assistant.

Aguirre, 65, has a storied history with Mexico's national team, guiding them to the Round of 16 in both the 2002 and 2010 World Cups. Despite struggling in recent years, the team looks to benefit from Aguirre's extensive international coaching experience.

“Aguirre is without a doubt the Mexican coach with the longest and most recognized career abroad, and he possesses in-depth knowledge of national team processes,” stated Duilio Davino, director of national teams.

According to Davino, Marquez will assist Aguirre for the next two years, with plans for Marquez to take over as head coach for the 2030 World Cup.

“Rafa is one of the most important players in Mexican history, with a distinguished national and international career. He will contribute his knowledge until 2026 and then assume leadership,” Davino added.

Lozano led Mexico to the 2023 Gold Cup title but was dismissed following a group-stage exit at the Copa America two weeks ago. Aguirre stands out as the only Mexican coach to have managed at an elite level in Europe, leading six teams in Spain, including Atlético de Madrid and Mallorca.

Additionally, Aguirre has coached national teams from Japan and Egypt.

Aguirre's first tasks will be friendlies against New Zealand and Canada in the United States this September.

Marquez, now 45, last played in a World Cup during the 2018 tournament in Russia. As a player, he captured four league titles and two Champions League titles with Barcelona, and recently coached Barcelona's reserve team.
