Japan Faces Olympic Challenge in Paris: Medal Predictions Tempered
Japan is expected to win significantly fewer medals at the Paris Olympics compared to their record haul at Tokyo 2020. With key athletes missing and the exclusion of karate, forecasts suggest a drop in golds and overall medal count. Optimistic Japan officials hope to outperform these predictions.
PARIS, July 23 (By Chang-Ran Kim) - Japan may find it difficult to replicate their historic medal count from the Tokyo Olympics at this year's Games in Paris. Despite achieving a record 58 medals three years ago, Team Japan’s delegation in Paris is smaller and without some key athletes.
Challenges abound, including the removal of karate from the events and the dismissal of a promising young gymnast for violating team rules. According to Nielsen's Gracenote, Japan is forecasted to win 11 fewer medals, with golds dropping from 27 to 13. Nonetheless, Senior Japan Olympic Committee executive Mitsugi Ogata remains hopeful, aiming for 20 medals.
Historically, host countries perform well at the Olympics due to stronger athlete participation and home crowd support, but Japan's subsequent Games performance may not follow this trend. If projections hold, Japan will not improve on their Tokyo results, likely reducing their medal count in Paris.
