Unified super middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez will fight undefeated contender Edgar Berlanga Jr on Sept. 14 in Las Vegas, Alvarez announced late on Thursday. The 34-year-old Mexican boxer became the unified 168 lb (76.2 kg) champion after knocking out Caleb Plant in 2021. Since then, he has successfully defended his WBA (Super), WBC, WBO, and IBF belts four times, with his most recent victory being a unanimous decision win over Jaime Munguia in May.

Berlanga, 27, hailing from New York with Puerto Rican roots, holds an unblemished professional record of 22-0. He enters this high-stakes fight fresh off a knockout win against former IBO light heavyweight champion Padraigh McCory in February. Berlanga has dubbed the upcoming contest as 'the biggest fight in Puerto Rico vs Mexico boxing history' in a statement on Instagram.
