In anticipation of their first T20I match against India, newly-appointed Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka emphasized the importance of creating a positive environment for his players. Drawing from his experience under various captains, Asalanka aims to enable his team to play freely and perform at their best.

India, under coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, will inaugurate their new era focusing on the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup. The game at Pallekele marks the beginning of a significant transition, with veterans like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja retiring from the format.

This T20I series also signifies a fresh start for Sri Lanka. Asalanka, who has captained since his Richmond College days and led Jaffna Kings to an LPL title, views the league as critical for national team selection. Both teams enter the field under new head coaches—Sanath Jayasuriya for Sri Lanka and Gautam Gambhir for India.
