Grace Brown of Australia emerged victorious in the women's Olympic time trial on the rain-slicked streets of Paris on Saturday. Brown managed to stay upright on her bike, a feat many of her competitors, including American favorite Chloe Dygert, could not achieve.
With a time of 39 minutes, 38.24 seconds, Brown delivered a commanding performance in the first cycling event of the Summer Games. Anna Henderson of Britain followed 1:31 behind to take second place, while Dygert, after crashing hard on a left-hand turn, managed to remount and secure the bronze medal.
Starting from the iconic dome of Les Invalides, the athletes raced in 90-second intervals along a 32.4-kilometer (20-mile) route. This edition of the Games marked the first time both men and women competed over the same distance in an Olympic time trial. Juliette Labous of France narrowly missed a medal, finishing fourth, and Demi Vollering of the Netherlands, who saw success at the Tokyo Games, finished fifth.
