Following a thrilling win against Sri Lanka in the first T20I, India skipper Suryakumar Yadav lauded the hosts for their commendable performance from the very start. A stellar bowling display in the second half of the innings steered India to a 43-run victory in the opening match of the three-game series at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Saturday.

"They played an impressive brand of cricket from ball one, keeping the tempo throughout. Credit goes to them. We knew how the pitch behaves at night and were fortunate there was no dew," Suryakumar remarked during the post-match presentation. Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka had opted to bowl first after winning the toss.

India set a robust target of 213/7 in their 20 overs, powered by strong knocks from Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill. Sri Lankan bowler Matheesha Pathirana was the standout performer, claiming four wickets while conceding 40 runs in his four-over spell. Dilshan Madhushanka, Asitha Fernando, and Hasaranga each chipped in with a wicket.

In pursuit of the formidable target of 214, the hosts were dismissed for 170 runs in 19.2 overs, giving India a 1-0 lead in the series. The highlight of Sri Lanka's innings was Pathum Nissanka’s 79-run knock off 48 balls, inclusive of seven fours and four sixes. Kushal Mendis added a crucial 45 runs from 27 balls. However, the rest of the lineup failed to make a significant impact. India's Riyan Parag shone with three wickets, while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel took two each. Mohammed Siraj and Ravi Bishnoi also contributed with a wicket apiece.
