Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended Indian shooter Manu Bhaker on Sunday for securing a bronze medal in the 10 Metre Women's Air Pistol event at the Paris Olympics. Bhaker's achievement marks a historic milestone as she becomes the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting.
PM Modi expressed his joy and pride, acknowledging the 22-year-old's narrow miss of a silver medal by just 0.1 point. He stated, 'Congratulations, Manu, on the victory. I am very happy as you won a medal. Although you missed a silver medal by just 0.1 point, but still you made the country proud...'
This victory serves as redemption for Bhaker, following her pistol malfunction at the Tokyo Olympics. In another historic feat, she became the first Indian woman in 20 years to reach an Olympic final in an individual shooting event since Suma Shirur in 2004. South Korea's Ye Jin clinched the gold with a 243.2 Olympic record, while compatriot Kim Yeji took silver with 241.3 points.
On the opening day, Bhaker placed third in the qualification round of the women's 10 Metre Air Pistol, securing her spot in the final. Fellow Indian shooter Rhythm Sangwan finished 15th, missing out on the final.
