The practice swim segment for the Olympic triathlon was canceled on Sunday due to water quality issues in the Seine River. Nevertheless, Paris officials reassure that the city’s famous river will be ready for the actual competitive events this week.

Both the men's and women's triathlons are set for Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Athletes were meant to get a feel of the course on Sunday, but concerns over the cleanliness of the Seine led to the swimming leg being called off. This decision followed a meeting involving World Triathlon representatives and local authorities.

The water quality problem is linked to recent weather conditions. Heavy rainfall during the Olympic opening ceremony and subsequent showers have impacted the Seine. However, with the forecast predicting no further rain, officials expect conditions to improve swiftly.

According to Paris Deputy Mayor Antoine Guillou, past rain events have seen water quality rebound within 24 to 48 hours, reinforcing their optimism.

Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps echoed this confidence, citing significant improvements in the Seine's quality due to extensive preparations costing 1.4 billion euros. If issues persist, organizers have backup plans including race delays or trimming the triathlon events.

Efforts to upgrade water quality involved constructing a massive basin to manage rainwater and wastewater, renovating sewer systems, and enhancing treatment plants. Despite Paris officials’ reticence to provide recent test data, World Triathlon maintains that the Seine will be suitable for swimming as scheduled.
