British Eventers Clinch Team Gold in Thrilling Show-Jumping Finale
British eventing riders Ros Canter, Laura Collett, and Tom McEwen secured gold in the team event at the Olympics, outperforming France, which had to be content with silver due to multiple errors. The win places Britain at the top of the eventing medals tally. Competing in the Versailles Chateau gardens, the noise from the enthusiastic crowd posed challenges, particularly for less experienced horses. Despite a tense moment when Canter incurred penalties, Britain maintained its lead.
British eventing riders Ros Canter, Laura Collett, and Tom McEwen won team gold on Monday after strong performances in the show-jumping final, with France taking silver in front of an overjoyed home crowd due to numerous mistakes.
The team gold medal, Britain's fifth, solidifies their status as the most successful nation in Olympic eventing history. The British team concluded the three-day competition with a combined score of 91.3 penalty points, surpassing France's 103.6 and Japan's 115.8.
Riding in a packed arena in the Chateau gardens of Versailles, many competitors noted the roaring crowd presented challenges, especially for younger horses with limited exposure to such excitement due to the COVID-19 pandemic. French rider Nicolas Touzaint, who incurred 8 penalty points with his horse Diabolo Menthe, expressed disappointment. "I executed the course as planned. We calculated everything meticulously... But the horse faltered on two verticals at the end. That's the only reason I can offer," he shared with journalists.
Britain was favored for gold after Germany exited the competition when one of their riders fell. The team's nerves were tested further when Canter received additional penalty points for missing an obstacle during her cross-country ride on Sunday, bringing France close to clinching gold themselves.
