French Canoe Coach Detained Amid Controversy in Paris

A French canoe and kayak coach who was participating in the Paris Olympics has been detained following accusations of assaulting police officers. The incident took place after officers stopped him for allegedly urinating in public.

Guillaume Berge, the coach in question, was not coaching at the Olympics but was engaged in public service events at the Vaires-sur-Marne canoeing and kayaking venue. The French canoe and kayak federation has suspended Berge from his duties pending the investigation.

The Paris prosecutor's office has opened a preliminary investigation into the matter. Federation president Ludovic Royé stated that Berge had coached French teams until last year but had not been chosen for the current Olympics. Instead, he was hired to promote interest in the sport at the Olympic venue.
