Top officials of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and representatives from all ten franchises will meet on Wednesday to discuss several key issues, including the controversial Impact Player rule and the possibility of increasing the number of uncapped players that each team can retain. The meeting will take place behind closed doors at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters in Mumbai, according to ESPNCricinfo.

Significant topics up for debate include shifting the frequency of mega auctions from every three years to every five years, reinstating the right-to-match (RTM) card at auctions, managing the availability of overseas players, and setting limits on total retentions. The discussions are based on feedback gathered by IPL CEO Hemang Amin from various franchises over recent months.

Last season, IPL saw numerous high-scoring games influenced by the Impact Player rule, which has been criticized for limiting the development of all-rounders. The rule permits teams to use a specialized batter or bowler based on match situations, a move that has sparked debate among players, including Indian captain Rohit Sharma, and several franchises who want the rule abolished.

Regarding uncapped player retentions, franchises were previously allowed to retain up to two uncapped Indian players ahead of the 2022 mega auction, while the new teams, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, could retain one each. With uncapped players showing consistent performances, franchises argue for increased retention allowances or more RTM cards in the retention pool.

Another point of contention involves the financial incentives for players. The league has suggested that teams better compensate players who have outperformed their base auction price yet continue to be retained at the same salary. Additionally, there have been proposals to remove restrictions on retaining overseas players within the overall retention limit.

Teams have also raised issues about the exploitation of mini auctions by overseas players to secure higher salaries. One proposal under consideration is making it mandatory to register for mega auctions. There is also discussion over imposing a bidding cap for mini auctions, based on the highest retention pick before a mega auction. This cap would limit how much a team can bid, potentially introducing a tie-breaker system if necessary.

It is unclear whether any final decisions will be made immediately following Wednesday's meeting, although all suggestions and concerns will be presented by the franchises. (ANI)
