Ryan Murphy arrived at the Paris Olympics with high hopes of reclaiming his backstroke crowns but will have to settle for a solitary bronze medal.

The 29-year-old from Florida was unexpectedly eliminated in the semifinals of the 200-meter backstroke on Wednesday night. His time of 1 minute, 56.62 seconds ranked just 10th among 16 swimmers, narrowly missing the top-eight finish needed to advance to Thursday's final.

“I really don't have a great frame on it,” Murphy remarked, still trying to process the loss. “Obviously, I'm very disappointed. It's my fault. I just didn't gauge it well enough.” Murphy had previously dominated the backstroke events at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, continuing America's strong tradition in these disciplines. After earning a silver and bronze in Tokyo, he was driven to reclaim his titles in Paris. However, he secured only a bronze in the 100 back and won't podium in the 200.
