Japan's basketball star, Rui Hachimura, will no longer compete in the Paris Olympics due to a left calf injury. A statement released by Japan's basketball federation on Friday confirmed that Hachimura would sit out the game against Brazil.
Hachimura experienced calf discomfort after Japan's 94-90 overtime loss to France on Tuesday. An MRI confirmed an injury to his gastrocnemius muscle, and the player has since left the team. 'As my injury required early treatment, I was unfortunately unable to accompany the team in accordance with NBA/FIBA rules,' said Hachimura, who plays for the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers.
Hachimura thanked fans worldwide for their support and expressed his pride in his team's performance. He played 29 minutes in the loss to France, scoring a game-high 24 points. With Japan 0-2 in group play, the winner of the now Hachimura-less matchup with Brazil will finish third in Group B, while the loser will be eliminated from the tournament.
