Tommy Fleetwood Shines at Olympic Golf to Share Lead
Tommy Fleetwood, the 33-year-old Briton, received notable crowd support at the Olympic venue. He claimed a joint lead with Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama after an impressive second round. The support reminded Fleetwood of past victories, but he remains focused on securing a podium spot.
Tommy Fleetwood received immense crowd support at the Olympic venue, leading his playing partners to question his nationality, according to the 33-year-old Briton on Friday.
Fleetwood excelled in the second round of the men's competition at Le Golf National near Paris, tying for the lead with American defending champion Xander Schauffele and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama. The crowd cheered the 2017 French Open champion, also a key player in the 2018 Ryder Cup-winning European team.
"Those supporters have been amazing out there. Wyndham (Clark) and Hideki both asked, is this your home country?" said Fleetwood, who aims for a podium finish on Sunday. Despite his past successes, Fleetwood says they won't guarantee victory. "Two rounds in and still got a chance, so it's a nice feeling," he added, noting the different mental challenge posed by the medal format.
