Former world number two Paula Badosa expressed that she felt like a top athlete once again after overcoming her injury challenges to secure her first title in more than two years at the Washington Open. Badosa, who hit her career-high ranking in 2022, faced significant setbacks due to a back injury.
Making her tour return in January, despite medical advice against playing on hardcourts, she persevered. On Sunday, her determination paid off as she claimed her fourth career title with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 win over Czech player Marie Bouzkova at the WTA 500 hardcourt event in Washington, D.C.
'One year ago I was on the couch, so it's a big difference now. I'm an athlete again,' Badosa told reporters. Her victory in Washington included notable wins over Emma Raducanu and Sofia Kenin, placing her in good form ahead of the U.S. Open starting Aug. 26.
