Aging with Grace: WNBA Legends Taurasi and Jackson Defy Time in the Olympics

Diana Taurasi and Lauren Jackson, two WNBA legends over 40, are competing in the Olympic quarterfinals. While Jackson is back after a 12-year gap, Taurasi is playing in her sixth Olympics. Both athletes challenge age stereotypes, contributing significantly to their teams despite not posting huge numbers.

Diana Taurasi wishes people would stop talking about her age, while Lauren Jackson openly admits she's old. These 40-plus WNBA titans are now in the Olympic quarterfinals, potentially facing off Friday if their countries advance on Wednesday.

Taurasi, 42, is playing in her sixth consecutive Olympics, whereas 43-year-old Jackson returns after a 12-year absence. Jackson, who retired in 2016 due to knee injuries, made a comeback to help the Opals clinch a bronze medal at the 2022 World Cup. Reflecting on her unexpected return, Jackson said, “It's crazy. I never imagined I'd be back here again.”

Australia and the U.S. didn't clash at the Worlds two years ago, but they might play Friday in a showdown of two long-time friends and rivals. Although neither Jackson nor Taurasi has put up giant numbers in the Paris Games, their experience offers invaluable support to their teams. U.S. teammate Napheesa Collier highlighted Taurasi's strategic insights, calling her “like another coach.” Taurasi fights against ageism in sports, saying, “When you dedicate your whole life to something, it’s disrespectful to be asked why you don’t just retire.”
