IOC Ensures Future Winter Olympics Hosts Amid Climate Concerns

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently awarded the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympics to France's Alpine bid and Salt Lake City, respectively. Jacqueline Barrett, the IOC's future Olympic Games hosts director, noted that the decision was influenced by having strong proposals. The IOC is exploring various hosting strategies for future events due to climate change concerns.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made a groundbreaking decision by simultaneously awarding the hosting rights for the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympics to France's Alpine bid and Salt Lake City. This move, which provides stability for the Olympic movement, was only the second instance of the IOC making dual host selections.

Speaking with Reuters, Jacqueline Barrett, the IOC's future Olympic Games hosts director, indicated that the dual award was not initially planned. However, having two strong proposals led to the unprecedented choice. 'We did not set out to do a double award,' Barrett said. 'If special circumstances arise to be able to seize opportunities... here we found ourselves in a situation with two great projects. And we thought we don't want to let these projects go.'

The IOC has now finalized hosts for all Summer and Winter Games until 2034. Barrett revealed that changes in the bidding process, such as direct dialogue with interested parties, have considerably reduced costs. Future hosting strategies may include event rotation or sharing among countries to address climate concerns. As new cities express interest in future Games, the possibility of another double award remains open.
