American wrestler Sarah Ann Hildebrandt clinched the Olympic 50kg gold medal after Indian contender Vinesh Phogat was disqualified for being overweight. The surprising twist came on the eve of the highly-anticipated final match.
Vinesh Phogat, who defeated Cuban wrestler Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinal, was set to face Hildebrandt but surpassed the weight limit by 100 grams during the weigh-in. Consequently, Lopez was brought in to compete as a replacement.
Hildebrandt, who had previously won bronze in the Tokyo Games, expressed her surprise at the chaotic turn of events. She eventually triumphed over Lopez, securing the coveted gold medal. Vinesh, meanwhile, endured severe dehydration and required IV fluids, highlighting the extreme lengths athletes often go to for their sport.
