Novak Djokovic Withdraws from Cincinnati Open After Olympic Triumph
Novak Djokovic, following his victory at the Paris Olympics, has withdrawn from the upcoming Cincinnati Open. The decision comes shortly after he defeated Carlos Alcaraz, achieving a significant milestone by winning all four singles Grand Slams and the Olympic title. His withdrawal allows Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to enter the draw.
Defending champion Novak Djokovic has withdrawn from next week's Cincinnati Open following his recent triumph in the singles event at the Paris Olympics, tournament organizers announced on Thursday.
This decision comes a mere four days after the Serbian excelled in Paris, defeating Carlos Alcaraz, and becoming the fifth player to win all four singles Grand Slams and the Olympic title during their careers.
"We certainly understand that it is a quick turnaround from his Olympic triumph to come to Cincinnati," said Tournament Director Bob Moran in a news release. "His title run here last year was so memorable. We are eager to see him on court again soon." Djokovic's withdrawal clears the way for Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to enter the draw.
Last year in Cincinnati, Djokovic marked his return to U.S. soil after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19 restrictions by besting Alcaraz in the final, and proceeded to clinch the most recent of his 24 Grand Slam titles at the U.S. Open.
