Neeraj Chopra, the javelin thrower who clinched a silver medal at the Paris Olympics, acknowledged on Friday that while he delivered his best effort, the gold belonged to Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem. Chopra stated that it is now time to assess his performance and work on future improvements. 'We all feel happy whenever we win a medal for the country. It's time to improve the game now. We will sit, discuss, and enhance our performance,' Chopra told ANI.
Chopra highlighted the tough competition, noting that every athlete has their moment. 'Today was Arshad's day. I gave my best, but some things need to be addressed and worked on,' he said. He also expressed confidence in India's future prospects at the Olympics, adding, 'India played well at the Paris Olympics. Our national anthem may not have been played today, but it will be heard in the future.'
With a best throw of 89.45 meters, Chopra secured silver at the Paris Olympics. His top performance came on his second attempt, but four consecutive fouls hampered his chances of winning gold. As a result, Chopra became the second male athlete post-independence to win two Olympic medals in an individual event.
Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem claimed gold with a record-setting throw of 92.97 meters, breaking Denmark's Andreas Thorkildsen's mark from the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Grenada's Anderson Peters took bronze with a throw of 88.54 meters. Earlier, in the Group B qualification round, Chopra produced a throw of 89.34 meters, his second-best all-time effort. Despite a competitive rivalry with Nadeem, where Chopra led 9-0 in head-to-head matchups, Nadeem's 90.18-meter throw at the 2022 Commonwealth Games surpassed Chopra's top effort.
