Thomas Bach, the International Olympic Committee President, announced on Saturday that he will not seek to extend his term after it concludes in 2025. Despite calls from some members urging him to stay, Bach, a German lawyer who has held the post since 2013, declared his decision at the end of an IOC session in Paris. Bach emphasized he came to this conclusion after deep deliberation and extensive discussions.

Bach mentioned that remaining would require changing the Olympic charter, which limits the president to 12 years. His decision signifies the end of a tenure marked by substantial reforms in the Olympic processes and an era of financial stability for the organization. With a voice breaking, he said, 'New times are calling for new leaders.'

The new IOC president will be elected in March 2025 in ancient Olympia, assuming office in June for a smooth transition. Under Bach, the organization has thrived financially, securing billions in future revenue and making the Games more attractive to host cities. However, he faced criticism for his stance on Russia amidst doping scandals and geopolitical conflicts.
