Rai Benjamin held off Letsile Tebogo to lead the United States to an Olympic gold in the men’s 4x400-meter relay at the Paris Games. Completing the race in an Olympic-record time of 2:54.43, the U.S. team displayed their long-standing dominance in the event.
“I calculated that run very well,” Benjamin stated on Saturday, emphasizing his high track IQ. Benjamin’s strategic approach allowed him to conserve energy until the final lap, ensuring a powerful finish. This victory adds to Benjamin’s gold in the 400-meter hurdles from the previous night.
The U.S. team of Christopher Bailey, Vernon Norwood, Bryce Deadmon, and Benjamin outran Botswana by a tenth of a second. Britain secured third place. Team USA's gold was their 19th in the event’s 26 runnings at the Summer Olympics. Quincy Wilson, a 16-year-old, also earned a gold medal, becoming the youngest U.S. male track athlete to do so.
This feat was followed by another triumph for the U.S. in the women's 4x400 relay, led by Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Gabby Thomas, concluding the track and field events at the 2024 Olympics with the U.S. winning 14 golds and 34 overall medals, the most of any country.
