Norway's Golden Surge: A Spectacular Turnaround at the Paris Games

Norway's mission to win eight medals at the Paris Games seemed out of reach, but exceptional performances on the final Saturday pushed them across the finish line. Golden triumphs in 5000m running, weightlifting, and handball were key to their success, complemented by bronze wins in beach volleyball and wrestling.

Norway looked set to fall short of their eight-medal target at the Paris Games, but a surge of extraordinary efforts on the final Saturday led to a dramatic turnaround.

Heading into the penultimate day, Norway had only secured three medals. A stunning golden Saturday transformed their standing, reshaping the narrative of a nation celebrated primarily for its winter sports prowess. 'For us who are very close to Norwegian elite sport, we knew it was a bold and challenging goal. This became evident during the Games, but then came 'Super Saturday,' which silenced all doubts,' said Norway's chef de mission, Tore Ovrebo, in a Sunday media conference.

Saturday's gold medals from Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the men's 5000m, Solfrid Koanda in women's 81kg weightlifting, and the women's handball team, along with bronze medals in beach volleyball and wrestling, propelled Norway to meet their medal objective. 'We had a fantastic day yesterday which ensured that we reached the goal, but it was by hanging by a hair,' Ovrebo remarked.

Looking ahead to the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, Ovrebo expressed concerns about financial constraints caused by the weakening Norwegian currency. 'I'm afraid that if the crown continues to slide and interest rates stay high, it could become very expensive. We may have to make compromises we don't want to make because of the cost,' he noted.

'I'm very nervous about that,' he added.
