Former Australian skipper and batter Ricky Ponting on Tuesday reflected on India's growing rivalry with Australia over the years, emphasizing that the contests between both nations are now almost as significant as the iconic Ashes clashes with England. The much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy will begin with the First Test at Perth Stadium from November 22 to November 26.

While Australia's battles with England for the Ashes have long been considered the biggest rivalry in Test cricket, Ponting acknowledges the inroads India has made into this space in recent times. "For the last couple of years, I've noted that Australia has always had fierce rivalries with England and South Africa. But now, India sits right on the back of what an Ashes clash is like, possibly even overtaking the rivalry with South Africa. This perspective is shared by the players as well, and I'm really excited for the summer," Ponting said.

"There will be a significant presence of Indian broadcasters and fans here. India will bring a very strong team, and given that Australia are the World Test Champions, it promises to be a thrilling summer," he added. The Australian legend noted that India's winning momentum in the rivalry began during the latter part of his career in the early 2010s.

"I witnessed the rivalry intensify towards the end of my career. That was when India started to stand up to the fight and say, 'We are playing against India now, and we have different leaders and players who will do everything to beat you,' whether it is in India or Australia," Ponting recalled.

The series will proceed with the Second Test at Adelaide Oval in a day-night format from December 6 to 10. Fans will then turn their attention to The Gabba in Brisbane for the third Test from December 14-18.

The customary Boxing Day Test at Melbourne's celebrated Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26-30 will set the stage for an exhilarating series conclusion. The Fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 7 promises a dramatic end to this exciting match-up.
