Pavel Bittner Clinches First Grand Tour Win in Dramatic Vuelta a Espana Stage Finish

Czech cyclist Pavel Bittner clinched his first Grand Tour victory in a breathtaking photo finish, edging out Belgian favorite Wout van Aert at the conclusion of the fifth stage of the Vuelta a Espana.

The 21-year-old Bittner, representing DSM-Firmenich-PostNL, outraced Van Aert in a dramatic sprint through the streets of Seville. Van Aert, who was gunning for his second stage victory, retained the green points jersey but will no doubt rue this missed opportunity. Australia's Kaden Groves, aiming for a repeat win, finished third.

Despite the challenging conditions and fierce heat, notably following the climbs of the previous stage, the 177-km route from Fuente del Maestre to Seville set the stage for a compelling finish. The breakaway group was ultimately swallowed with 38 kilometers to go, leading to a high-stakes bunch sprint. Van Aert's early attack seemed to assure his win, but a misjudgment allowed Bittner to steal the stage by the slimmest of margins. Portugal's Rui Costa was a casualty, forced to abandon the race after a crash. The Vuelta, with Slovenia's Primoz Roglic leading overall, heads back to the mountains on Thursday.
