France's Clara Burel pulled off an incredible comeback, defeating 2017 champion Sloane Stephens in the first round of the U.S. Open. Following a harsh 0-6 loss in the first set, Burel rallied to take the next two sets 7-5, 7-5, showcasing resilience and strategic gameplay.
"I was a little bit nervous at the beginning and Sloane was playing really well," admitted Burel. "I just kept fighting and I found a way." Despite Stephens' strong start, her form declined in the second set, allowing Burel to exploit her weaknesses.
Burel broke Stephens' serve multiple times in a tense third set, ultimately winning by targeting her opponent's backhand. She now advances to a second-round match against Victoria Azarenka.
