Arsenal has officially signed Spanish international Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad to enhance its midfield options, aiming for Premier League glory.

The midfielder has reportedly signed a long-term contract for a fee of £32 million ($42 million), shortly after Sociedad's coach Imanol Alguacil offered him a public farewell. Merino, a key player in Spain's recent European Championship victory, scored the decisive goal in their quarterfinal win over Germany.

Merino has been instrumental for Sociedad since joining in 2018, helping the team win the 2020 Copa del Rey and advance to the Champions League round-of-16 last season.

At Arsenal, Merino will compete with Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard for a spot in central midfield under manager Mikel Arteta, who has roots in Sociedad and is from San Sebastian.

Merino replaces Portuguese midfielder Fabio Vieira, who has transferred to Porto. Arsenal, the Premier League runner-up for the past two seasons, has begun this season with two consecutive wins, aiming to reclaim the title they last won in 2004.
