In an electrifying UEFA Champions League opener, Liverpool FC claimed a 3-1 victory over AC Milan at San Siro Stadium. Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk and French teammate Ibrahima Konate proved pivotal for the Reds, according to Goal.com.

Amid early pressure from AC Milan, Van Dijk's key clearance and an offside decision staved off a formidable attack. However, Milan's Christian Pulisic found the net, bypassing Greece's Kostas Tsimikas and Van Dijk. Undeterred, Liverpool bounced back as Mohamed Salah hit the bar twice before Trent Alexander-Arnold's free-kick allowed Konate to equalize. Van Dijk later secured the lead with a corner goal.

In the second half, Ryan Gravenberch of the Netherlands connected with Hungary's Dominik Szoboszlai, who teamed with Dutchman Cody Gakpo to set up another Szoboszlai goal. The UCL's new format sees 36 elite European clubs play eight matches each during the league phase, ditching the traditional group stage. The top eight teams progress to the round of 16, while those placing 9th to 24th enter a knockout play-off. The knockout stages commence in February, culminating in a final on May 31, 2025, at Munich's Allianz Arena.
