Kawasaki Frontale secured a 1-0 victory over Ulsan HD in their Asian Champions League opener, thanks to a stellar goal by Brazilian striker Marcinho. The tournament marks a new format with teams vying for spots in the last 16, culminating in finals in Saudi Arabia.
Japan's Kawasaki Frontale made an impressive debut in the Asian Champions League Elite on Wednesday, securing a 1-0 victory against hosts Ulsan HD. The game was decided by a moment of brilliance from Brazilian striker Marcinho, who netted a stunning goal nine minutes into the second half.
Marcinho's decisive strike came as he stepped in from the left wing, unleashing an unstoppable curling shot from his right foot past South Korean international goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo. This win places Kawasaki on three points alongside Gwangju FC and the Chinese sides Shanghai Shenhua and Shandong Taishan, who also secured victories in the opening round.
In another fixture, Shanghai Port managed to earn a 2-2 draw against Malaysian team Johor Darul Ta'zim. The match saw Arif Aiman twice put the visitors ahead, but Shanghai replied through Gustavo and Willian Popp to salvage a point. The competition, restructured by the AFC, will see the top eight teams progress to the last 16, with culminating matches in Saudi Arabia.
