Aaron Connolly Opens Up: Battling Alcoholism Amid Football Fame

Sunderland's Ireland forward Aaron Connolly has publicly disclosed his years-long struggle with alcoholism, sharing that he spent a month in rehab after recognizing the toll it was taking on his life. Connolly, now 24, detailed his experiences in an interview for Sunderland's website, coinciding with World Mental Health Day.

The footballer recounted his meteoric rise as a teenager in the Premier League, starting with two goals against Tottenham Hotspur. However, he admitted this success marked the beginning of his downward spiral as he succumbed to addiction and lost sight of his career aspirations.

Despite achieving eight goals for Hull City last season, Connolly's off-pitch struggles overshadowed his football achievements. In July, he sought help by entering rehab, aiming not only to revive his football career but primarily to reclaim his life. Now with Sunderland, Connolly is focused on his personal recovery before returning to the field.
