England pacer Reece Topley has faced disciplinary action from the International Cricket Council (ICC) after an emotional reaction to an injury sustained during the first T20I against the West Indies. Topley, visibly frustrated, slammed a chair on the stairs after jarring his right knee during Saturday's match.
This incident resonates with a previous occurrence in Mumbai during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where Topley had similarly vented frustration by knocking over a chair after suffering an injury—and escaped penalties. This time, however, the ICC found him guilty of violating Article 2.2, concerning the abuse of cricket and ground equipment during international matches.
As a result, Topley's match fee has been cut by 15 per cent, and a demerit point has been added to his record, marking his first offense in two years. The charges were brought forward by on-field umpires Leslie Reifer and Zahid Bassarath, among others, with Topley accepting the ICC-imposed sanctions without dispute.
