The Texas Rangers signed free-agent right-hander Shelby Miller to a one-year contract, the team announced Wednesday. Miller, 28, missed most of the last two seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2017. He has already passed a physical with the Rangers, per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. Terms of the deal were not immediately available. Miller, a native of Houston, returns to his home state after stints with the St. Louis Cardinals (2012-14), Atlanta Braves (2015) and Diamondbacks (2016-18).
He was an All-Star with Atlanta, posting a 3.02 ERA and setting career highs that season with 33 starts, 205 1/3 innings pitched and 171 strikeouts. He also set a Braves franchise record with 24 straight winless starts, however, ending the streak on his final start of the season. Miller pitched only 38 combined innings in 2017-18, compiling a 2-6 record with a 6.87 ERA. He joins Texas with a career record of 37-53 and a 3.83 ERA in 131 games (124 starts).
Texas also announced the signing of outfielder Danny Santana and right-hander Jean Gomez to minor-league deals. Both players received invitations to spring training with the Rangers. Santana, 28, has a .256 average with 13 homers and 100 RBIs in 364 major league games with the Minnesota Twins (2014-17) and Atlanta Braves (2017-18). The 30-year-old Gomez is 27-30 with a 4.40 ERA and 40 saves in 299 appearances (46 starts) in nine big-league campaigns with the Cleveland Indians (2010-12), Pittsburgh Pirates (2013-14), Philadelphia Phillies (2015-17) and Chicago White Sox (2018).
