In the opening match of the ICC Men's Champions Trophy 2025, South Africa's captain Temba Bavuma made a strategic decision, opting to bat first against Afghanistan after winning the toss in Karachi on Friday.

Placed in Group B alongside cricket powerhouses England and Australia, South Africa is set to face a new challenge on a Karachi wicket that appeared different from typical Pakistani surfaces. Bavuma, addressing the pitch's ambiguity, emphasized the importance of assessing conditions early and expressed confidence in his team's bowling consistency, claiming, "Consistency has been our strength." However, the squad will miss wicket-keeper Heinrich Klaasen, sidelined due to a left elbow injury.

Afghanistan’s skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi shared Bavuma’s sentiment about the conditions, expressing a similar inclination to bat had they won the toss. Acknowledging their past encounters, Shahidi emphasized Afghanistan's strengths, particularly in spin bowling, with hopes to start strong by capturing early wickets. The teams' line-ups reflect strategic choices, with South Africa fielding one spinner and Afghanistan boasting a strong spin attack.
