Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko secured the biggest victory of her tennis career on Saturday, defeating top seed Coco Gauff 6-1 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open in Montreal.
Mboko, an 18-year-old wild card entry, expressed her disbelief and gratitude to the fans following her triumph over the reigning French Open champion. "Thank you, you helped me so much," she said in French during an on-court interview with the home crowd.
Next, Mboko will face either Lin Zhu or Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, both of whom are unseeded, as she strives to make it further in this prestigious tournament. Meanwhile, on the men's side in Toronto, Alex Michelsen also achieved his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal in a promising performance.
