In a surprising turn of events at the world championships, Olympic gold medallist Grant Holloway did not progress past the semi-finals in the 110 metres hurdles on Tuesday. The setback means a new champion will be crowned in Tokyo, as Holloway had previously secured the world title three times over six years.
The intense competition saw Jamaican Tyler Mason outpace his rivals with a leading time of 13.12 seconds. Following Mason was world leader Cordell Tinch from the United States, clocking in at 13.16, and Japan's Rachid Muratake at 13.17, who received overwhelming support from the home crowd in the National Stadium.
Meanwhile, American Ja'Kobe Tharp and France’s up-and-comer Just Kwaou-Mathey, timed at 13.19 and 13.22 respectively, earned spots in the finals later that day. Kwaou-Mathey narrowly beat Jamaica’s Demario Prince by a mere two thousandths of a second to advance.
