Report: Twins nearing deal with SS Polanco

The Minnesota Twins are nearing a contract extension with shortstop Jorge Polanco that covers up to seven years and includes a guaranteed $25 million, ESPN reported Thursday. Last season, Polanco returned from an 80-game league suspension after testing positive for a banned substance and batted .288 with 27 extra-base hits, 42 RBIs and 38 runs in 77 games.

The 25-year-old switch-hitter has posted a career average of .272 with 23 homers and 147 RBIs since making his debut with the Twins in June 2014. According to ESPN, the contract would buy out Polanco's final pre-arbitration season, all three of his arbitration seasons and up to three free-agent campaigns.

At least five years are guaranteed, and the total value could climb if Minnesota exercises a club option for a seventh season, per ESPN. --Field Level Media
