Muralitharan on Decline of Spin Bowling in IPL Era
Spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan criticizes current IPL spinners for lacking traditional spinning skills, emphasizing the art's sidelining in favor of speed and variations. He highlights the shift from developing spin skills at a young age, as the focus now turns towards entertainment, impacting the balance between bat and ball in cricket.
Sri Lankan spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan is voicing concerns about the current state of spin bowling in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He argues that spinners today are not cultivating the art of turning the ball, but rather focusing on variations and speed due to an early-age coaching deficit.
Muralitharan explains that unlike in the past, young spinners are more focused on facilitating the entertainment aspect of T20 cricket, opting instead for one-day cricket tactics. This shift, he suggests, limits the spinners' ability to evolve into true masters of the craft by the age of 18 or 19.
The spin maestro argues that this trend not only makes it difficult for spinners to excel in the IPL but also skews the balance between bat and ball, aligning more with entertainment than skill development, as seen with high-scoring games targeting audiences' thirst for excitement.
