The Supreme Court has reserved its decision on a plea by Congress leader Pawan Khera seeking anticipatory bail. The case involves allegations that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, possesses multiple passports and undisclosed overseas properties.
Represented by senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, Khera argued that the charges against him are a matter for trial and that not securing anticipatory bail would undermine its purpose as an option available to those seeking pre-arrest protection. Singhvi also pointed out that some invoked sections are bailable.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Assam government, countered Khera's plea, alleging falsified accusations and claiming Khera has been evading authorities. The Supreme Court's interim order stayed a prior grant of transit anticipatory bail, directing Khera to approach the Gauhati High Court.
