SAI Supports Indian Billiards Champions on the World Stage
The Sports Authority of India sanctioned funds for India's participation in the IBSF World Men's Billiards Championship, aiding champions Sourav Kothari and Pankaj Advani. Kothari triumphed in Ireland despite personal struggles, highlighting his resilience. He plans further participation in upcoming snooker events, aiming for the World Snooker Championship.
The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has extended financial support to Indian billiards champions for their participation in the IBSF World Men's Billiards Championship in Ireland. The 2026 edition of the championship saw the government backing world champion Sourav Kothari, multiple-time champion Pankaj Advani, and their coach Ashok Shandilya.
SAI sanctioned approximately Rs 6.46 lakh to the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI), covering travel, lodging, and other essential expenses. On April 29, in an all-Indian final in Carlow, Ireland, Kothari emerged victorious, retaining the championship by defeating Advani in a dominant display.
Kothari's victory was remarkable, considering his personal challenges. He shared his emotional journey post his father's death, triumphing in a national title just days later. Encouraged by BSFI officials and family, he continues to compete, aiming for upcoming snooker events and the next World Snooker Championship.
