Liga MX Clubs Clash with FMF Over World Cup Training Rules
The Mexican Football Federation announced that players failing to attend the World Cup training camp will be dropped. This decision sparked tension between clubs, particularly following Toluca's previous exemption. Toluca decided to release their players, addressing availability disputes ahead of the World Cup co-hosted by Mexico.
The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has declared that Liga MX players who fail to attend the national training camp starting on Wednesday will not be included in the World Cup squad. The directive effectively rescinds special exemptions granted to players from Toluca.
Initial arrangements between FMF and clubs had facilitated player releases from May 6, yet Toluca was permitted to keep players for their CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-final against Los Angeles FC. This decision met criticism from Guadalajara owner Amaury Vergara, who prompted his club's select players to return for domestic playoffs.
The situation underscores brewing tension between club and national team obligations, with overlapping events causing friction. Despite the FMF's firm stance, Toluca complied by releasing Jesus Gallardo and Alexis Vega as Mexico's World Cup preparations continue with several friendlies before the tournament kickoff against South Africa on June 11.
