Barbados Tridents Return: A Cricketing Renaissance

The Barbados franchise in the Caribbean Premier League will revive its former identity as the Barbados Tridents from the 2026 season. The Caribbean Premier League's Barbados franchise is set to revive its iconic identity as the Barbados Tridents from the 2026 season, concluding a five-year period under the Barbados Royals name. The transition, spearheaded by owners Royals Sports Group, includes a return to the traditional blue-and-yellow national colors, abandoning the pink uniforms adopted in 2021.

The rebranding initiative is part of a novel three-year "One Barbados" collaboration with the Government of Barbados, which plans to become a minority stakeholder, pending regulatory endorsement. Despite the new partnership, Royals Sports Group will continue to maintain majority ownership and manage daily operations, as reported by ESPNcricinfo. This rebranding affects both men's and women's teams, including the Women's CPL team that launched in 2022.

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley emphasized that reclaiming the Tridents' identity mirrors the nation's pride and aspirations as it nears its 60th independence anniversary. "Cricket has always been central to our national character and autonomy. Hence, representing ourselves through this partnership, in our national colors and under a name resonant of our identity, is immensely significant," Mottley stated in a joint declaration.

Manoj Badale, lead owner of Royals Sports Group, described the venture as a pioneering public-private alliance in the realm of franchise cricket. "Reintroducing the franchise as the Barbados Tridents, adorned in national colors, is a profound expression of pride and resolve," Badale added.

He affirmed the company's unwavering commitment to Barbados, the CPL, and a unified goal: achieving lasting success, with CPL titles for both men's and women's teams returning to the island. As part of this initiative, the franchise will also host a "Pink Promise" charity match during the CPL season to support local charitable initiatives.

The Tridents, one of the founding CPL franchises, played under their original name from the league's inception in 2013 until 2020, during which they secured titles in 2014 and 2019. They were rebranded as Barbados Royals following the acquisition by Royals Sports Group in 2021. Despite the presence of West Indies batter Rovman Powell, the franchise struggled during the 2025 campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table. The 2026 CPL season is set to commence on August 8, with the Tridents slated to face Jamaica Kingsmen on August 11. (ANI)
