Young Stars Threaten Sjostrom's Reign in Women's Freestyle
Sarah Sjostrom's 100m freestyle world record is under threat as Marrit Steenbergen and Anna Moesch shake up women's rankings. Moesch clocked the third sub-52 swim ever, only for Steenbergen to surpass it. Sjostrom, focusing on shorter events, faces fierce competition as U.S. and Australian swimmers gear up.
Olympic champion Sarah Sjostrom's record in the 100 metres freestyle is under threat. The dynamic Dutch swimmer Marrit Steenbergen and young American Anna Moesch are challenging the women's all-time rankings.
University of Virginia's Moesch, clocked an impressive 51.94 seconds at the AP Race London International, marking the third sub-52 swim in history. However, this achievement was soon overshadowed by world champion Steenbergen, who recorded a time of 51.86 seconds at the Mare Nostrum series in France.
Sjostrom, 32, after returning from maternity leave, is focusing on other events, but the competition remains stiff. Moesch's emergence strengthens the U.S. swimming team potentially altering their fortunes against Australia, who dominated the 4x100 relays. Eyes also turn to upcoming competitions, including the Glasgow Commonwealth Games trials.
