Sorana Cirstea Makes History with Quarter-Final Berth at French Open

Romanian veteran Sorana Cirstea secured her spot in the French Open quarter-finals by defeating China's Wang Xinyu 6-3, 7-6(4) on Sunday. This marks only the third time Cirstea has reached the quarter-final stage in a Grand Slam tournament.

In a remarkable career resurgence, the 36-year-old has become the oldest player to enter the top 20 rankings earlier this month. Despite her upcoming retirement at the end of the season, Cirstea is showcasing some of the best form of her career. She has reached two semi-finals during the clay court season and notably defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in Rome.

Cirstea achieved another milestone by becoming the oldest player in the Open Era to record a 6-0, 6-0 victory in a Grand Slam main draw. In the match against Wang, she dominated the opening set, breaking her opponent twice to lead 5-1. Although Wang fought back, forcing a tiebreak, Cirstea prevailed, clinching the win in 84 minutes.
