Kimi Antonelli's Magic Lap Secures Monaco GP Pole
Italian driver Kimi Antonelli, representing Mercedes, captured the pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix, narrowly outpacing Max Verstappen in an electrifying qualifying session. Antonelli's stunning performance highlights his lead in the championship, with his pole position being the first for an Italian in Monaco since 2004.
In a breathtaking qualifying session at the Monaco Grand Prix, Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli clinched pole position, narrowly edging out Max Verstappen with a so-called 'magic lap'. This victory cements Antonelli's leading position in the world championship following a string of victories.
Antonelli described the lap as magical, highlighting the fierce competition with Verstappen. “It was one of those laps that we call a magic lap. I was able to put it all together. It was such a close qualifying with Max,” the 19-year-old Italian remarked, his 1:12.051-second lap just enough to secure first place.
The session saw Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc securing third and fourth positions, respectively. Meanwhile, reigning champion Lando Norris, who claimed victory last year, will start from the fourth row alongside his teammate Oscar Piastri, reflecting McLaren's challenging prospects in their notable 1,000th Grand Prix race.
