Denied at the Gate: World Cup Dreams Halted for Somali Referee

Omar Abdulkadir Artan, expected to become the first Somali to officiate a World Cup match, was denied entry into the United States over the weekend. This decision has dashed his dreams of taking part in the global sporting event set to commence on Thursday.

A FIFA spokesperson confirmed on Monday that Artan is now unable to train and officiate at the World Cup, highlighting that immigration processes, including visa adjudications, are managed solely by the host country and not governed by FIFA.

The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol cited vetting concerns as the reason for Artan's inadmissibility at Miami International Airport. Despite Artan possessing a valid visa, this case underscores ongoing tensions surrounding the stringent immigration policies championed by the Trump administration.
