Blue Jays sign RHP Buchholz to 1-year deal

The Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday announced the signing of pitcher Clay Buchholz to a one-year contract. The deal is reportedly worth $3 million with another $3 million in incentives. The deal unites Buchholz with a team against whom he has more wins than any other opponent in his career, 14. It also puts the 34-year-old right-hander back in the AL East after a two-year absence. He spent the first 10 seasons of his career with the Boston Red Sox.

After pitching in Philadelphia in 2017, Buchholz pitched for Arizona last season. He went 7-2 with the Diamondbacks, his .778 win percentage his best since going 12-1 in 2013. His 2.01 earned-run average was also his best since 2013, though he made only 16 starts and threw only 98 1/3 innings. He did not play until May as he recovered from surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his pitching arm in April 2017. A strain of the same tendon in mid-September cut his 2018 season short.

In 12 seasons in the majors, Buchholz is 88-64 with a 3.86 ERA in more than 1,200 innings in 224 games (206 starts). He is only 15 strikeouts short of 1,000 for his career. Buchholz is a two-time All-Star and was a member of the Red Sox's 2013 World Series championship team. He also threw a no-hitter in 2007 in just his second major-league start. He joins a Toronto rotation spearheaded by Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez.

To make room for Buchholz on the 40-man roster, the Blue Jays designated outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. for assignment. --Field Level Media
