Soccer-Fleetwood Town manager Barton denies Barnsley allegations

Fleetwood Town manager Joey Barton on Thursday denied allegations that he assaulted Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel following an English League One (third-tier) match between the two sides last weekend. South Yorkshire police said they were investigating an alleged altercation in the tunnel following the match at Oakwell.

Earlier this week, Barnsley filed a formal complaint to both the English Football League and the Football Association over the alleged incident. "With regards to the alleged incident on Saturday following our game against Barnsley, I emphatically deny the allegations made," Barton said in a statement

"Given this matter has not been formally closed, it would be inappropriate for me to make any further comment." The police confirmed on Wednesday that a man has been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence and racially aggravated assault, and released on bail until next month.

Barnsley are currently second in the League One standings while Fleetwood are 11th. (Reporting by Hardik Vyas in Bengaluru Editing by Toby Davis)
