The Los Angeles Angels activated designated hitter Shohei Ohtani from the injured list, and he'll make his season debut Tuesday night in Detroit. The 2018 American League Rookie of the Year has been recovering from Tommy John surgery. He will bat third in the opener of a three-game series with the Tigers, with Albert Pujols moving to first base.
Ohtani batted .285 with 22 home runs and 61 RBIs last season. He also made 10 starts on the mound, compiling a 4-2 record with a 3.31 ERA. The 24-year-old had surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow on Oct. 1. He is not expected to pitch this season.
The Angels also reinstated right-hander Cody Allen and infielder Zack Cozart from the 10-day IL. To make room on the active roster, Los Angeles designated outfielder Peter Bourjos and right-hander Chris Stratton for assignment and optioned infielder Luis Rengifo to Triple-A Salt Lake.
